The Humber’s chemicals sector is of European scale and the second largest in the UK, worth an estimated £6billion to the economy and supported by the Humber Ports. The region is home to one of the UK’s four main petrochemical clusters, with two oil refineries, Phillips66 and Total Lindsey, providing 27% of the UK’s refinery capacity – both located on the South Humber Bank.

The area’s chemicals clusters encompass expertise in petrochemical refining, personal care, pigments and colours, agrochemicals, fine chemicals, paint and coatings, surface treatments, speciality chemicals and inorganic and organic commodities. Companies active locally include Croda, Air Products, BP Chemicals, Nippon Gohsei, BOC (LINDE), BASF, Phillips66, Cristal, Kemira, Knauf, Novartis, Syngenta, Total and Yule Catto.

These operations and major installations are supported by a wealth of local infrastructure and service facilities providing logistics, storage, road and marine transportation, engineering and contracting services, as well as energy supply.   

Saltend Chemicals Park in Hedon, Hull, has seen investment totalling over £500million by BP and 7 other multi-national companies who recognise the site’s advantages and potential.

The region benefits from strong university support with award-winning Centres of Industrial Collaboration allowing the industry to access university expertise in key areas of technology. As a result, the Humber now offers global expertise in chemical research, innovation and manufacturing.
